*Breed-up programs have been in existence for many years in the United States, as well as in other countries. In the United States, these programs are necessary due to the strict regulations on importing live animals from other countries. They are implemented for most species. Careful management must be taken to ensure that the breed, as a genetic resource, is not threatened.

It is important to have a clear breeding goal for your farm. Each breeding should have a specific purpose, such as genetic diversity, genetic purity, growth rates, milk production, and reproduction, including multiple births. Every breeding should have a role in the future of the breed you are establishing. It is also crucial to keep accurate breed-up records. There are many more reasons to consider when entering into a breed-up program, but the most important is to always breed up with a purebred or graded Domestic breed-up ram. If using a Domestic purebred ram, it must be graded and considered carefully to ensure the genetics will continue to move towards the original breed standards. Therefore, in our breed-up program, we do not breed with cross-bred (percentage rams). All breed-up, crossbred rams below F5 (or Spitti) will be castrated, and we do not sell them as intact rams. Wethers are available for sale and make wonderful additions to any farm as a companion, teaser "ram", or even as therapy.
